QUESTION

Why is SNMP monitoring, (including SNMPGet.exe and LANWatch) failing on some machines?

(You may also notice a message that MSVCR71.dll was not found in the System
Event Log.)

ANSWER

The msvcr71.dll file is a windows resource used by Microsoft Visual C++ version 7.1 shipped with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and therefore this dll file is required by a huge number of programs worldwide that make use of the msvcr71.dll file; including the open source tool snmpget.exe.

In almost all cases, the msvcr71.dll file should already be available on your computer system. However, there are reasons that can result in missing msvcr71.dll file or corrupted msvcr71.dll file, and as a result users may receive msvcr71.dll errors when firing off an application that makes use of this dll file.

The simple solution is to download the copy of msvcr71.dll and put it on your hard drive. Open the zip file and copy the dll to \Windows\System32

msvcr71.zip

This is a compressed (zipped) 32 bit file. This will work on 32 or 64 bit systems. (The SNMPGet.exe applicaiton is also 32 bit.)

MORE INFORMATION

If simply copying the file doesn't resolve the problem, follow these steps.

A) Put the new file to a location on your system directory. By default, this is C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me), C:\WINNT\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP, Vista, 7). Please use path C:\Windows\SysWOW64 if you use a 64-bit Windows.

Make sure overwrite any existing files (but make a backup copy of the original file).

C) Then register the dll this way:

START > RUN > (TYPE the Following)

regsvr32 "c:\windows\System32\msvcr71.dll"

D) Reboot your computer.

APPLIES TO

V 5.x and K2
