Having instant access to your VMs is very useful when verifying backups or in situations where you need access to mission critical data immediately.

Note: You will need to add Instant Recovery Write Space before initiating an Instant Recovery job.

Note: Instant Recovery is supported for VMware vSphere backups only.

To Instantly Recover a VM

Click from either the Recover or Protect pages.

The Create Instant Recovery Job dialog will open.

Select the backup to be instantly recovered from the Backup Catalog. If you were testing only, you would simply end the instant recovery session after verifying your backup. If you intend to keep the VM, you have the option of moving the VM's disks off temporary backup storage to your production storage. Below is an explanation of the processes involved in migrating to production storage:

UVB Motion Seeding

The UVB Motion Seed job creates restored disks from the selected backups. This job is similar to a standard recovery job with the exception that the VM is not created and configured during the Motion Seed processing. UVB Motion Seeding is available when an instantly recovered VM is selected that is in the Active state. This feature can be activated by clicking Start UVB Motion Seeding on the Instant VM Recovery tab of the Recover page. It also appears in the Define Recovery Options step of the Create Instant Recovery job dialog. The seed job will appear on the Active Jobs tab of the Jobs page when in progress.

When the Seed process is finished, the disks are left on the production datastore until Complete UVB Motion is run. For more on this subject see the section that follows.

Complete UVB Motion

This feature finishes the UVB Motion process by moving data from the BDS to production storage. It becomes available when an instantly recovered VM that has completed the Seed process is clicked. In the table on the Instant VM Recovery tab, the status will read Ready to Complete UVB Motion. Click Complete UVB Motion to kick off the Complete job for the VM. The complete job will appear on the Active Jobs tab of the Jobs page when in progress.

Note: VMs must be powered off to begin this process. Use the vSphere Client to power down the machine(s) before proceeding.

Once the VM is running from production storage and all changes are merged, you can power on the VM and begin using it as normal.

Using Storage vMotion to move VMs to production storage

If you have the proper vSphere licensing, you can leverage Storage vMotion to move your instantly recovered VMs to your production storage. To move a VM using Storage vMotion, select the instantly recovered VM in vSphere client and click the Migrate option. In the wizard that opens, select Change datastore then follow the remaining steps to select the storage and any required options.

When the migration completes, open the PHD Console and click Instant VM Recovery. In the Current tab, select the VM that you migrated and click End Instant Recovery to remove the VM from the list.

Note: Instant Recovery is supported for VMware vSphere backups only.
