SUMMARY

Explanation of the UVB 8.0 update process

DESCRIPTION

When new minor releases or hotfixes become available, they can be applied automatically by enabling the Auto Update feature. If Auto Updates are not enabled, you can still apply the update file manually after downloading it (the link to download the file is included in the associated Product Update knowledge base article).

The Update Process

When an update is available, an alert is generated and displayed on the dashboard. This alert contains information about the available update and a link to a Knowledge Base article which contains specific details about the fixes and enhancements included in the update as well as a link to download the update file (to apply manually if needed).

Note: If you have configured email alerts you will also receive an email when the update becomes available. If you clear the alert but do not apply the update, you will receive another alert and another email the next time the auto update process runs. To avoid receiving multiple emails, do not clear the update available alert.

When an update is applied, all appliances receive the update file and the update process begins. As each appliance is updated, it is put into a maintenance mode, preventing any jobs or process from starting. If any jobs are currently running, the update process will fail for that appliance and must be attempted again.

Updates are applied to all Engine appliances first, then Management appliances, then finally the Presentation appliance. If you are viewing the web interface when the Presentation appliance begins the update process (or if you connect to it while it is updating) you will be presented with a maintenance mode web page that will refresh automatically after the upgrade has completed.

Hyper-V Services must be updated separately using the most recent Hyper-V Services installer. The Hyper-V Services installer is included in the update package and also as a separate download.

Automatic Updates

Auto Updates can be enabled and configured using the Global tab of the Configure page. When enabled, you can select a time to check for updates. Each day at the specified time, the Presentation appliance will check for any available updates. If found, an alert is generated letting you know that the update was available and was applied.

Note for Hyper-V Users: The automatic update process does not include updates to the Hyper-V Services - these must be updated separately on each Hyper-V host using the most recent Hyper-V Services installer. The Hyper-V Services installer is included in the update package and also as a separate download.

Manually Applying Updates

If Auto Updates are not enabled, or if the auto update process was not able to update a specific appliance, you can manually apply updates to your appliances in one of two ways, described below.

To manually apply an update to all appliances

Download the update package from the link available. This link will be included in the Knowledge Base article associated with the update, included with the update alert.

Go to the Configure page of the web interface and click the Global tab.

Click Upload. The file upload dialog opens.

Select the downloaded update file and click Save.

To manually apply an update to an individual UVB Virtual Backup Appliance:

Download the update package from the link available.
